Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction in Pregnancy
Ben Calvert-Painter is an osteopath with over 20 years clinical experience in musculoskeletal pain in pregnancy.
What is Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)?
SPD, also known as pelvic girdle pain (PGP), is defined as mild to severe pain over the front of the pelvis called the pubic symphysis. Pain can spread down into the groin and inner thigh or thighs.
Weak abdominal ‘core stability’ muscles and pelvic floor muscles can be some of the cause behind this, but so can previous injuries and back problems. As bump grows and mum’s weight increases combined with the natural softening of the pelvic ligaments during pregnancy, this can lead to a change in walking and posture, thus leading to further issues.
What are the symptoms?
The main symptom is pain or discomfort in the front of the pelvic region. Pain can also be in the low back, groin thighs or hips. This pain can vary from mild discomfort to severe and disabling pain and can appear at time from normally the 3 third month of pregnancy.
How can osteopathy help?
Treatment would be based at addressing imbalances in the pelvis and the low back, releasing tension in muscles and joints, posture and exercise advice and either taping or advice on supports.
What can someone suffering with PSD/SPD do to help themselves?
• If something hurts, don’t do it!
• Sleep with a cushion between your legs
• Keep your knees together when getting in and out of the car or out of bed
• Rest when you can
• Use an exercise ball to sit on
• Measure your pain free gap between your knees and give it to your midwife
Some actives to avoid would be sit-ups, running, lunges, swimming (breaststroke)
Exercises that may help are:
• Core stability exercises
• Pelvic floor exercises
The main and best advice is to seek treatment and advice as soon as possible. As the longer you leave it increases the chance for further issues and complications.
